Common speech and language difficulties include:

Speech sound difficulties – your child may experience difficulty with certain sounds and use other sounds instead. This can make them hard to understand and can be frustrating for the child and their listener. If they are school age it may also impact on their ability to socialise and to learn to read and write.

Difficulty putting words together into sentences – some children do not acquire language skills very quickly or easily. They may seem to use fewer words than their peers and may not be able to join words to make simple or complex sentences. Often they may be communicating in another way such as pointing at what they want or relying on someone being able to guess what they need. They may feel frustrated however as they will not be able to communicate easily.

Difficulty understanding what is said – this can be harder to detect as children can appear to understand what is said to them. Difficulties understanding language may be accompanied by short attention span, difficulty using language, speech sound difficulties and sometimes behaviour problems caused by frustration.
